In support of Daffodil Day here at Aukilani Kids, we have been exploring and learning what Daffodil Day is all about. We spoke about how daffodils are the symbol for many people fighting Cancer, and how these yellow flowers represent hope and new beginnings.

What is Daffodil Day?

Every year the Cancer Society holds an annual campaign to raise awareness and funds for the Cancer community. Money is raised for cancer research and so much more. During this event, much of the community take part in fundraising, donating money, dressing up in yellow and of course wear a yellow daffodil to support.

‘Every day 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. For over 30 years New Zealanders have supported the work of the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day...’

When is Daffodil Day?

In NZ, Daffodil day is on Friday 26th August 2022 and is celebrated every year in August. Ways in which we celebrate Daffodil day include:

- Donating money

- Fundraising events

- Dressing up in yellow

- Volunteering

- Wearing a yellow daffodil

- Spending time with someone you know is battling Cancer

- Incorporating yellow into your day wherever you are, work, school, home etc

- Skydive or a BALD new hair cut! (The more braver ways to celebrate and support, well done if you've already been this brave!)

When did Daffodil Day start?

Since 1990, the Cancer Society’s street appeal has inspired so many people in our communities to come together and support the Society’s work.

Why do we celebrate Daffodil Day?

‘Every day 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. For over 30 years New Zealanders have supported the work of the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day...’ as stated on the Cancer Society's website.

The purpose of Daffodil Day is to raise awareness of cancer in New Zealand. Every year, on this day many fundraisers are held to help raise money for the Cancer Society. Donations help provide a wide range of support services, education, and awareness programmes plus fund vital research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer.

Daffodil Day is coming up and we have been keeping busy here at Aukilani Kids with many activities to show our support, from yellow playdough activities, to colouring in daffodil flowers, making daffodil collages and talking about Daffodil Day.
